Calgary Food Bank

Calgary Corporate Challenge is proud to support the Calgary Food Bank annually through our PCL Construction Management Scavenger Hunt. Each year participants gather food and toiletries as part of the items on the Scavenger Hunt list and donate them to the Food Bank. In 2010, over 9,200 pounds of food (valued at over $25,000) was donated through the PCL Construction Management Scavenger Hunt. That is enough to feed more than 500 families of four!

The Calgary Food Bank was also the recipient of food and cash donations collected at the Brain Freeze Winter Trivia night, held in Schanks South this past March. Teams brought food and money to help restock the shelves after the Christmas rush. The 2011 Brain Freeze event brought in over 600 pounds of food donations.Since 2000, thousands of pounds of food, valued at over $192,000 have been collected through this event.

Take up the Charity Challenge and become involved with the Calgary Food Bank year-round. Here are some ideas of how you can contribute:

Make a donation.

Cash donations provide us with the most amount of flexibility and allow us to purchase the groceries we are in the highest need for. Due to the volumes that we purchase, we can stretch things further - generally with a $10 donation from you, we can buy $30 of groceries.

Drop-off food.

Food is what we provide and is always appreciated. Although we graciously accept whatever we receive and can put it to use, we have what we call "guaranteed" items in each hamper. That means they will always be included, even if these items are not donated and we need to purchase them. As such, we are always in need of these items. These include: spaghetti sauce; pasta; peanut butter; jam; tomato sauce; canned beans; cereal; canned or dry soup; baby formula (Similac, Enfalac, Prosobee); baby food (jar foods); individually wrapped cheese slices; canned fish; juice (1 litre); canned fruits and vegetables; rice.

Plan a Community Food Drive.

Donate items in-kind.

We need help in a whole bunch of ways that are not food or money. Everything from forklifts or truck parts to printing or advertising space. Call us!

Become a volutneer.

We have a staff of 40, but depend daily on volunteers that work in the warehouse (as we need 80 to 100 each day to get things done), not to mention the hundreds that help us as special events, food drives and other fundraisers. We are always in need of good people! If you'd like more information on volunteering, click here!
